Adults can also be affected by strabismus. In them, disturbing double images often play an important role. For example, a pre-existing strabismus can decompensate and lead to double images or a neurological disease (brain tumors, myasthenia gravis or stroke). Also, other health problems (for example diabetes thyroid disease, an accident or a head injury, or a damage to the eye muscles during some kind of an eye surgery) can be the cause of an eye movement disorder.

To determine the cause of strabismus, we first perform a profound orthoptic examination to determine the squint angle, the type of eye movement disorder and a possible need for prisms. In addition, the eyes are thoroughly examined by an ophthalmologist to make the diagnosis. Then, the further procedure will be discussed with you.

In the case of eye muscle paralysis and in cases of neurological or systemic disease, further medical clarification of the underlying causes is very important, in addition to orthoptic and ophthalmological treatment. Therefore, we work closely and interdisciplinarily with family doctors, internists, neurologists and all other specialists involved.
